As you know pain in your feet can be devastating when you try and walk, run or even stand. Pain in this area makes it very difficult to continue with the normal activities of life.

What is a Bone Spur?

  • Extra pieces of bone that form usually on joints or on the heel of the foot. Can occur anywhere in the body on bone.
  • Occur due to repetitive stress on a particular area, most common is arthritis.
  • They limit movement and cause pain.
  • Are outgrowths of the heel bones resulting from stressed areas of your heel as it rubs against your shoe.
  • They are often visible on an X-rays and they are usually found when searching for the cause of other foot related problems such as arthritis or bone loss in the bones that make up the ankle.

What happens with a Bone Spur/ Posterior Heel Pain or Plantar Heel Pain?

  • Puts pressure on your ligaments, muscles and nerves. Which is why you may feel an enormous amount of pain shooting across and up your foot when you try and walk.
  • Pressure from tight shoes causes stress on the heel and can cause the Achilles tendon to become pinched or trapped between tight muscles, causing Posterior Heel Pain and swelling.
  • If the bone spur has grown so far as to interfere with other bones, ligaments, tendons and tissues, it may have to be surgically treated. This is usually done when the damage to the foot or heel is extreme.

What you can do!

The good news is that there are actions that you can take to reduce plantar heel pain!

  1. Rest and ice packs to reduce swelling and inflammation of the muscles and ligaments that could be causing pain in other areas of your feet.
  2. Massage therapists can work on your feet, stretching and relieving muscles that are full of tension and stress because of your pain. But they should not work on the area of the bone spur.
  3. Some relief can be found by using an anti-inflammatory medication, available over the counter.
  4. Shoe inserts can also make a difference by changing the areas on your feet where the pressure hits as you walk.

If you are unsure of what is causing your posterior heel or plantar heel pain a visit to a specialist who deals with these concerns is important.

If the treatments of ice, stretching and exercises do not help the pain, other options may be necessary.
