Pet Parasites
Pet Parasites can be life threatening if not dealt with properly, especially if if hookworms are involved, and anytime there are fleas around, hookworm becomes a possibility.Protect your pets from this painful situation by keeping fleas under control and spotting the signs of hookworm. Let us all try to eliminate parasites from our pets lives.
All of us desire to care for our pets' health, but it is not always possible to protect them from parasites that endanger their health. Even with the cats and dogs being typically thought of as fairly free of diseases, both are still susceptible to getting pet parasites like hookworms. Hookworms are also called Dipylidium Caninum, and can be lethal if the pets are not treated for them. Hookworms have actual teeth, which enable them to cling to the dog's or cat's small intestine (humans can also get these dangerous parasites!). These parasites do have three main parts to their bodies: the tail, neck and head. Each hookworm has just on neck and head, but can have more than on tail sections.
The tail sections are of utmost importance to these pet parasites or hookworms, because they breed using them. Each section of tail has the hookworm's reproductive organs in it. The sections for these tails can come off from time to time and the body disposes of them with the animal's feces. Fleas come along and use the feces to lay their eggs in, along with eating the tail sections, which makes them now have the hookworms. The pet parasites then get injected into the animal as the fleas bite into it. Also, if the animals eat the fleas they can catch the parasites. The main preventative for keeping hookworms away from your animal is to keep your house, yard and pet free of fleas. Also, have your animal checked at the veterinarian to make sure it has no parasites. The animal can be given special medication that will cleanse its body of the hookworms. Hookworms might not appear at first to be as dangerous as they actually are. However, as they keep living in the animal's body, they increase in numbers. After a while they can deprive the animals of important minerals, nutrients and vitamins through attaching to the intestinal walls, which can make the animals emaciated looking. If your pets are left untreated, these hookworms can kill them. The veterinarian inspects your pet's stool to see if it has the pet parasites such as hookworms. Also, if its stool is too runny or wet, this is an indication it has hookworms. Pets that show signs of parasites should be examined immediately by the veterinarian, because there is a high risk of humans getting hookworms from their pets. After your pet has gotten rid of their hookworms, make sure that you kill off the fleas in any area the pet lives this will lower the chance of re-infestation. Parasites need to be dealt with by a professional if your pets are to be happy and healthy.
